A few days to just Be.

I promise I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth. When summertime hits, Tybee is full of tourists, and vacationers. For the past four and a half years, Sean and I have strategically marketed our business so that we can continue to live on Tybee, pay our bills and feed our kids. Each year we have been busier than the year before. This year I believe we hit an exponential growth spurt, with customers and referrals coming in from several directions. The only downside about having a seasonal business, is…well that it’s seasonal. So when the work is here, we take it. Even if that means not taking much of a break. I remind myself of the trips we take south of here in the winter months when the tourists are back in their snow covered homes in the Midwest.

Last week I did manage to take a few days off to visit my parents and spend the weekend with my dad for Father’s day. The down time was been great. My great friend and sidekick, Carolyn joined me as we hopped on a train from Savannah to Fredericksburg. I purposely didn’t not make a bunch of plans for our time away.  We had leisurely mornings drinking coffee and making big country breakfasts. Nights were spent under clear skies sipping beer and eating pistachios. One day we indulged in pedicures and a lunch date.

Over the weekend, we attended the 50th anniversary of the Fagowee Ski Club. This was the group of skiers and travelers that I grew up with and were my companions as we travelled the world. Being a member of an adult ski club since I was six years old, taught me a few social skills early on in my life. Memories flooded in as we flipped through pages and pages of carefully curated scrapbooks showcasing our trips through Europe, and skiing fresh white powder in lake Tahoe, Utah, and Colorado. Summertime camping trips and floating down the Shenandoah River in black rubber inner tubes.

It was a nice couple of days to reconnect and see many faces I hadn’t seen in years. The spirit of the Lost Indian tribe continues to live on, even though many members are no longer able to hit the slopes like they used to.

Sunday evening Carolyn and I climbed aboard the ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’ and returned to another week full of bustling business. My schedule is filled with a couple weddings, a few family portraits, a commissioned art piece and a clothing catalog shoot with four models. I love the creative work that keeps me busy, but I am also glad I took a few days off to just BE.
