There are so many reasons the I love living on our quirky little island. Sure there is the light sandy beach that is 50 yards from my front door, and there is the twinkling diamonds on the ocean when a full moon is setting. But more than that, the community here is like nothing I have ever experienced. At any given week on Tybee you will find a celebration of some sort. Traditional holidays, made up holidays, birthdays, celebrations of life, bacon…you name it there is a party or parade or club for it. Even though this island is made up of a diverse bunch of misfits, one thing that everyone can agree on here is we all hate the cold. Most Tybeenians are transplants from the north that finally discovered there are roads that lead away from the miserable frozen places they once called home. Once Christmas comes everyone starts counting the days till St Patrick’s Day, when beach weather arrives again. The winter is still pretty amazing here and the frigid cold days can be counted on our shivering fingers and toes. With a spirit of celebration, we find a way to even celebrate the cold. Thanks to a crew at our favorite pizza joint/dive bar “Huc-a-poos”, they turn these bitter days into an event. A few sheets of plywood,  couple of sailboat sails, compressed air and some water…mixed with below freezing temperatures overnight they created Huc-a-poo Hill. An ice luge for all to come and enjoy some fun. Big and little kids alike gathered for an arctic blast. I was challenged from a friend for a race. Just as we were in line for our turn, the local news showed up to feature the event. Here’s the news clip of a glimpse of life on Tybee in the winter. That was last night, but today I woke up to sunshine and blue skies, the temperature should be around 60 today which means there will be a parties all over the island celebrating!
