Telling Lesbians to “Go Straight”

Several options are available when traveling from one end of the island to the other. If we’re not drinking, then the obvious choice is taking our own car. Once the night gets started we have our favorite rounds that we make and they are on both ends of the island. We always make a responsible choice to not drive if we’ve had more than a couple beers. Its just the right thing to do. In the summertime my friends and I will often take our bicycles. Last night was still a little too chilly for that. Some of our older driving children are a top choice in our transportation line up. Next to call is Breezy Riders. They are the pink taxis on Tybee that don’t look like all the others. For $3 I can always depend on Breezy to get us where we want to go and home safely at the end of the night.

It is rainbow pride weekend on Tybee right now. Its a happy weekend with lots of fun loving people having parties in all of our restaurants and bars. A parade that is celebrated throughout the island, is due to begin in just a few hours. I am glad that Tybee embraces diversity and is a place where people can come from all over and feel welcome.

Last night I was out with my one of my besties, Carolyn. Who is straight, but her husband is Gay. We’ll, that’s just because his name is Gay.

As the rockabilly band Johnny Octane finished their last set at North Beach Bar and Grill on the open air deck under a nearly full moon, we decided to head to the next party stop, the Sandbar which is on the South end. We had just made friends with three lesbian women one of which was, Judy, their designated driver. They had two extra seats so we hopped in the car with them since we were headed to the same place. Giving Judy turn by turn directions, we navigated her two miles through the island. “Stop at the stop sign and turn right. Go to the light and turn left.” But when it came to the next light and we told them to “go straight”, hysterical laughter filled the car. Carolyn and I were then scolded to never again tell a car full of lesbians to “go straight!’

I’m not one to debate political, religious or social issues, especially in public. From my own belief and the way I want to walk out my days, I choose the Love that covers all. A saying that I have always heard and I apply to my own life is “Some of my friends do, and some of my friends don’t, and I am with my friends.”

  1. I was told many, many years ago by one of my dearest friends: “always say ‘go forward’ never straight…”
