The Little Black Bag and a Surprise 7 Day Adventure

Locals and tourists alike were beginning to pack in and stand shoulder to shoulder as Sean and Henny were playing a few songs in their set to kick off the weekly Wednesday night open mic jam session.  I was exhausted from an already full day of work and play, but sat on a barstool with some close friends next to the band. Sean started into one of his stories as he does every week and mentions our 25 year marriage and clan o’kiddos. I didn’t see it as anything different than any other night.

He mentions Carolyn had been in cahoots with him planning something to make sure I was there at that time. He hands me a plastic bag to open while everyone in the bar was watching me. (My least favorite place to be is in the spotlight) Inside is a small 10×14 inch backpack with lots of zippers and little compartments. He goes on to say that I need to have it packed by morning because he’s taking me away for a week to an undisclosed location that will be warm and has a beach. As I was trying to process what he was saying there were cell phones from all around the bar videoing what was going down. I sat there stunned, and speechless, wondering how he pulled off planning an adventure without my knowing. My thoughts quickly turned to our schedule and I was thinking how the heck can we get away for a week? He assured me it was all good. He told me he’d tell as much or as little details as I’d want to know.

This morning I woke up and opened the bag, realizing how small it actually is and mentally begin thinking of what I’d need and thinking of where we might be headed. I guessed correctly that we would be returning to Costa Rica. Although he said it was somewhere we have been to before, but not a place we’ve stayed. I am all in for the adventure and pulled a handful of items from my closet and prepared 3oz bottles of sunscreen and hair conditioner.

I packed a few tank tops and shorts, three tank dresses, swim suit, hiking sandals, flip flops, a journal, cell phone, spare batteries, two hats and one long sleeve shirt. Zipped it up and was ready to go.

As I write this, We are now in the car driving to Florida. We have an early morning flight from Orlando to San Jose, Costa Rica tomorrow. Anything more than that, I am completely in the dark!

I think Sean must have been getting bored with my blog and felt I needed some new material! I’ll be blogging everyday as our adventure unfolds. Stay tuned!
